Starfleet accuses Kirk of negligence in command, as even the computer shows that he killed someone by making a mistake (even though it was bound to happen eventually, ergonomically speaking).

For a good view of the original compared the remastered versions, check out this article at TrekMovie.com.

Episode Pictures (click for hi-res):

01 damage

Here, we clearly see where the pod was ejected from.

02 matte painting

The HD remaster SFX group was absolutely on top form in this episode. On the Starbase, you can seep offices and people in the windows. It was a nice touch of them to keep the original painting and simply add to it.

03 Star Ship Status - 10 ships

Commodore Stone’s starship status chart. This shows how important set design can be. To the viewer, these small touches can really make a world seem “lived in” and more real, even if the original show didn’t have the resources to show another starship in orbit.

04 kirk signing paper

Kirk reading papers and signing them with a surprisingly long pen.

Another superb shot added into the HD upgrade. If you look carefully, not only are there people in the windows, but there are two people in space suits moving a temporary cover to the hole left by the pod ejection.

Spock breaks apart a strange rock, then when he throws a part away, it explodes! WTF?

04 spock shot by flower

Spock saves Kirk’s life by shoving Kirk out of the way of a flower shooting spores. Fortunately, he has green blood, and it doesn’t affect him as badly.

05 second redshirt down

Redshirt Kaplan gets fried by lightning. Redshirt #2 is dead.

06 village with a weird plant

07 redshirt 3 explosion

Actor Jay D. Jones takes the full impact of this explosion, due to mistiming of the explosion. We talk about this in the episode.

08 redshirt 3 giant explosion

The explosion has entirely hidden Jay D. Jones who is still flying towards the camera.

09 redshirt 3 falling out

Redshirt Mallory has stepped on an explosive rock, and redshirt #3 is dead. This episode helped the whole redshirt meme start. Sadly, Jay Jones, the actor was injured.

13 village and forked tongue

As they enter the village, we can see a giant snake tongue off to the left. This is their symbol.

14 hut interior and snake tongue greeting
